We like beer. We write about beer sometimes, but the real experts are the folks over the Michigan’s Brewers Guild and MittenBrew.com. A few of smaller breweries are some of our personal favorites here at The Awesome Mitten: Brewery Vivant, Right Brain Brewery, and Greenbush Brewing.

#24 Experience Japanese Culture at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

Region: West Michigan

Location: 1000 E Beltline Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525

Five miles east of Grand Rapids lie the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, a rare jewel in the crown of West Michigan’s already diverse regional offering of activities, entertainment, and the great outdoors. This particular venue combines these three categories. Named for the late founder of the eponymous supermarket chain, the gardens host 158 acres of green houses, flower displays, and a truly amazing outdoor sculpture park.

The newest addition to the garden, which opened on June 13th, 2015, is The Richard and Helen DeVos Japanese Garden. This 8-acre garden features two large ponds surrounded by many winding paths and bridges that allow visitors to be taken away into a peaceful Japanese setting. Japanese designer Hoichi Kurisu is well known in both Japan and the United States as an experienced designer of gardens, including the likes of Rockford’s Anderson Japanese Gardens and the Dubuque Arboretum.

The Lakeshore Museum Center Historic Sites is comprised of five different experiences. Hackley and Hume Historic Sites preserve the homes of Muskegon’s most famous lumber baron, Charles H. Hackley, and his business partner, Thomas Hume, bringing late 19th century craftsmanship to life. The Fire Barn Museum is a re-creation of the C. H. Clay Avenue, and has undergone an extensive renovation and tells the story of common families living during the Great Depression. Michigan’s Heritage Park at Hilt’s landing explores 10,000 years of Michigan history in a natural woodland setting. Visitors will discover an Ottawa Village, a log cabin, and a 1910s farm house all of which have hands on experiences throughout.
