#22 Navigate the wilds of Belle Isle

Region: Southeast Michigan

Location:

Our writer Krissy Schwab describes Belle Isle: “Located between the United States and Canada, Detroit’s Belle Isle is the third largest island in the Detroit River –even larger than Central Park in New York City!  With just under 1,000 acres of land, Belle Isle offers plenty of places to visit and see or plenty of space to spend a lazy summer afternoon away from the city heat.

Looking for some history? Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, Dossin Great Lakes Museum, and the Belle Isle Aquarium are grouped together on the southwest side of the island. A short jaunt north on the island takes visitors to the Belle Isle Zoo.  The Zoo is a microcosm of plants and animals found around Michigan.  Aside from informative exhibits, the Zoo offers a small petting area and deer refuge for children to explore. Belle Isle also features a number of parks and beaches for gatherings.  On almost any windy summer day, visitors can see professional kite fliers around the island.  People can also fish from the beaches and bike around the island on the bike paths.”

#30 Immerse yourself in the eccentric art of The Heidelberg Project

Region: Southeast

Location: 42 Watson St, Detroit, MI 48201

We’ll let our writer, Jennifer Hamilton, explain what makes this spot so special: 3600 Heidelberg Street, in downtown Detroit, is a scene unlike any that I have ever witnessed. Abandoned homes covered in various forms of eccentric art line the blocks surrounding the area. Each home is covered in so much detail that I could have spent hours examining each one and cannot wait to go back. Palpable messages are shouted from these homes, yet with just a step closer, hidden memorandums sneak out and surprise you. Each exhibit offers something completely unique and is entirely encompassing. Most of the art displayed comes from recycled pieces of local Detroit goods, such as stuffed animals, couches, and street signs. The works of art are designed to tell a story regarding specific issues in Detroit’s society. The Heidelberg Project was purposefully positioned in an impoverished area and is meant to shed light on the lack of resources in that neighborhood. Though it is meant for enjoyment, visitors are cautioned to be aware of their surroundings and to not bring valuables while visiting.”
